Chapter 35

Personal Reaction: I found chapter thirty-five to be very straightforward. I did not know about the thesis method versus the answer method, so that was interesting to learn about. I am using the thesis method for my upcoming research paper. I also enjoyed reading about the “build to your finish” method and the “sum up the findings of others method”.

Professional Reaction: Chapter thirty-five is all about writing your research paper. There are two methods for starting your paper, either the thesis method or the answer method. Once your method is decided, it is time to use your sources to support your ideas. You must interpret your sources (find out what they mean to your paper), refine your thesis, organize your ideas, then finally begin your draft. When you are drafting your paper, it is recommended that you cite your sources immediately to save time in the future. There are two ways that you can execute a research paper. The first way is to build to your finish. This means that each paragraphs gets stronger and stronger. The other way is to sum up the findings of others. This means that you summarize the work of other scholars. After the draft is complete, it is time to revise and edit. The writer can do this by following the checklists on pages 704 and 705.

Chapter 30 & 32

Personal Reaction: I liked chapter thirty and thirty-two as I feel that they have prepared me to write my research paper. Most of this information is review, but some of the strategies are new to me. I look forward to applying these chapters to my research process.   

Professional Reaction: Chapter thirty is all about planning your research project. The first step is to find a topic that intrigues you. You must develop a focused research question, one that you will use to guide your research. Once your topic is final, it is time to narrow in on a specific area of interest. Make sure that your topic is neither too broad nor too narrow. Next, you must choose what types of resources that you are going to utilize (opinions/statistics/facts/etc.). To manage the project, you must record your information, start a research archive and create a schedule. If you follow these steps, you will be able to effectively write out your research project. Chapter thirty-two is all about finding sources. There are several places to find information including: on the internet, the school library and in the field. When using the internet, make sure that you choose a credible search engine. Use keywords and limitations to find exact information. The library has many different resources including databases, encyclopedias, dictionaries, handbooks and companions, government documents, atlases, biographical sources, bibliographies, special materials and so much more. When looking for information in the field, you may want to interview, observe, or use questionnaires.

Chapter 12 Supporting a Position with Sources


The information I gathered from Chapter 12 is going to help me with sources that I have never considered to use for research on my paper.  Personal experience is a good way to relate and challenge myself to a better understanding on my topic.
Taking a look at pictures has never crossed my mind to gather information for my paper.  Questioning what kind of information they can provide such as how a person is feeling, appearance, other possible sources and other activities that may have taken place.
While watching the movie "Erin Brokovich" the other night with my son, I was explaining to him that this was based on a true story and all her information she gathered came from public records,  personal home visits and interviews with the people in this case. Another reliable and great source for gathering data.

Chapter 12

Personal Reaction: I liked chapter twelve. I thought that the information was very intriguing and relevant to my upcoming research paper. I found the information to be useful, as our research paper is very extensive with multiple sources required, this chapter will be extremely useful when writing my paper. My favorite part of the chapter was the chart on page 243.

Professional Reaction: Chapter twelve is all about how to effectively support a position with sources. First you must generate ideas from where you are going to gather your information. Whether it is from a print source or an online one, find the source that is most appropriate for the paper that you are writing. When finding these sources, keep your audience in mind, make sure that you pick sources that follow the instructions of the paper as well as sources that incorporate several different perspectives on the topic at hand. After you have found a source, skim through it to make sure that the information is relevant and accurate. Think about this: how does the source use its own sources to support its position? How might you want to use this source? What audience does the source address? Once you have picked your sources, it is time to pull pertinent information. Find information that you want to quote, information that you want to paraphrase and information that you want to summarize. Each method has its own strengths, so it is up to you to decide which method to use where. Last, you must revise and edit. Strengthen your thesis, add your voice, cite your sources and integrate the new found information effectively.
